Project Details
Amsterdam Port is located in the Netherlands, serving as a critical hub for European and global trade. Strategically positioned with direct access to the North Sea and extensive inland waterways, the port handles a diverse range of cargo types, including bulk, break bulk, containers, and project cargo. As one of Europe’s largest ports, Amsterdam plays a pivotal role in connecting international shipping with inland transportation networks.
Problem
Amsterdam Port's previously uses energy-inefficient metal halide floodlights for night operations. These lights demand frequent maintenance and fail to deliver uniform illumination or adequate lighting levels to meet modern safety standards, particularly for high-traffic areas. Additionally, the port's lighting remains fully operational throughout the night, even when container-handling activities are minimal, leading to significant energy wastage.
Solution
The proposed solution includes transforming the port’s lighting infrastructure with Lsleds FLN range of LED high mast luminaires, which are 100W, 500W and 1000W strategically placed at the base of the crane, at the top (up to 80m) and alongside the 40m high luminaires Top of rod. These luminaires are designed for use in large outdoor environments, such as ports, where strong performance, energy efficiency and durability are critical. They operate at only 500 watts, saving approximately 50% of energy compared to traditional 1000 watt metal halide fixtures, resulting in significant cost and energy efficiency benefits.
Key features include an anti-glare design that improves lighting quality while mitigating light spill and pollution in surrounding urban areas. With an IP68 waterproof rating and specialized corrosion-resistant construction, these luminaires are designed for harsh port environments, ensuring reliable operation even in high humidity, salinity or extreme temperatures. Additionally, the luminaire is rated for 100,000 hours at L80 lumen decay, providing stable, high-performance lighting without maintenance for at least five years, reducing operational downtime and replacement costs.
The lighting upgrade not only optimizes the safety and operational efficiency of the Port of Amsterdam, it also aligns with the port’s sustainability goals by significantly reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact.
